Countering Violent Extremism – Community Strategies

Benin, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, and Uganda

This May Global Ties Detroit will be welcoming eight (8) professionals from Africa participating in the International Visitor Leadership Program World Learning regional project Countering Violent Extremism – Community Strategies. This program was designed to explore the underlying conditions that fuel extremism – political grievances, communal conflicts, social structures, and economic disparity. During their stay this delegation will be examining community-based efforts designed to build strong community resistance to violent extremism in the U.S. They also will be exploring ways to promote tolerance, including community policing and prison rehabilitation programs and discussing how different sectors of American society work together to resist violent extremism, including government, academia, civil society, religious communities, and the private sector.
