Global Ties Detroit Welcomes Sumaiya Ahmed Sheikh to Board of Directors!

Global Ties Detroit is thrilled to announce the appointment of Sumaiya Ahmed Sheikh to our Board of Directors. With extensive experience in civic engagement, political strategy, marketing, and communications, Sumaiya is a key addition to our governing board as we continue to build global connections through impactful exchange programs in SE Michigan.
Currently serving as the Executive Director of Kalasho Education & Youth Services, Sumaiya has held several prominent roles, including Head of Engagement for Appointments in the Executive Office of Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Throughout her career, she has been dedicated to promoting political and civic involvement while fostering collaboration across communities.
In addition to her work at Kalasho, Sumaiya contributes to the National Advisory Council of the AAPI Victory Fund and serves as a Senior Advisor to Emgage. She has also led the Oakland County Democratic Party as Executive Director and served as Communications Director for Emgage. Her efforts in civic engagement and political advocacy have earned her numerous accolades, including recognition as one of Oakland County’s "40 Under 40."
Sumaiya’s commitment to global connectivity aligns seamlessly with Global Ties Detroit’s mission to promote mutual understanding and cultural exchange. “I believe in the power of international and citizen diplomacy to bridge cultures and build lasting connections,” said Sumaiya. “Engaging with global leaders and community initiatives fosters a more interconnected and collaborative world.”
As a mother and lifelong Michigander, Sumaiya is passionate about shaping a future where children value cultural understanding and global ties. "I am excited to help create a world where the next generation grows up embracing diversity and global connections, ensuring a more inclusive and engaged future."
Sumaiya is particularly drawn to Global Ties Detroit’s focus on collaboration. “In a time of political divide, it’s more important than ever to create policies that benefit everyone,” she said. “I admire how Global Ties Detroit fosters cooperation and dialogue across all sectors.”
