General Motors (GM) announced its plans in January 2021 to become carbon neutral by 2040. The automotive giant will sell only zero-emission vehicles by 2035, marking the company as a committed leader in the electric vehicle revolution and in making the world a cleaner, greener, and healthier place.
Ambitious and innovative changemakers like GM make Detroit a leader in energy technology and sustainability. Through the U.S. Department of State International Visitor Leadership Program and MCID Washington, Global Ties Detroit shared Detroit’s exciting progress with a global audience. GM experts including Tom Cooney, Vice President for International Affairs, spoke with the Malta Ministry for Energy, Enterprise, and Sustainable Development about energy technology and promoting electric vehicles in the U.S. and global market.
A better, more prosperous future is rooted in the work and vision of companies like GM, and Global Ties Detroit is honored to provide a platform for these conversations and grateful for the engagement of General Motors leaders.
Tom Cooney and David Teolis, GM Assistant Director of International Economics and Global Ties Detroit Board Member, shared their thoughts on the project:
“Global Ties Detroit provides a valuable forum for bringing together industry experts with future world leaders to discuss issues of economic, political, cultural, and environmental importance. General Motors’ participation in these international exchanges reflects its commitment to positive global change through constructive dialogue.” -David Teolis
“We all win from great conversations like this one on a carbon-free energy future. As a former State Department diplomat who arranged many such international delegations to the U.S. in the past, I was proud to participate in this program in my new role alongside my GM colleagues as we shared GM’s vision for a world with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion. Thanks to Global Ties Detroit for pulling Malta from the Mediterranean into the Great Lakes for a day!” - Tom Cooney
