“New Americans are 26% of the U.S. population but hold only 3.5% of state legislative seats,” says New American Leaders (NAL). The rich diversity of the U.S. is not well represented in government, but NAL is changing that. Through its training programs, NAL empowers minorities, immigrants, and refugees to run for political office, supporting them in their journey to share their voice and create systematic change at all levels of government.
New American Leaders is at the forefront of a movement to enact lasting change through policy and civic engagement. The power of promoting inclusive democracy can be found in the story of Senator Stephanie Chang, Michigan’s first Asian American woman to be elected to the state legislature. Sen. Chang participated in NAL’s Ready To Lead training program and used the skills she learned to run for office, and since her election has led the way on air quality protection, improving economic opportunities, and affordable, safe drinking water for the community. She is also a founder and board member of Rising Voices of Asian American Families, and served as a mentor with the Detroit Asian Youth Project.
Besides working in the community to encourage minority participation in democracy, New American Leaders also shares their work on a global scale through international exchange programs implemented by Global Ties Detroit.
NAL’s Program Manager, Aamina Ahmed, recently participated in a U.S. Department of State-sponsored project implemented by Global Ties Detroit. The project, A Global Moment in Time: Peace and Justice, was designed for a delegation working in human rights and social justice from countries including Armenia, Bangladesh, Egypt, Somalia, and more.
NAL and Rep. Stephanie Chang spoke to the delegation, discussing ways to empower and encourage minorities to participate in the political process to build safer and more inclusive societies. The conversation led to new ideas and international connections that will expand opportunities and protections for minorities in countries around the world.
Thank you to New American Leaders for participating in Global Ties Detroit programs that promote peace-making, international exchange, and citizen diplomacy efforts! Through international exchange and powerful conversations like these, we are one step closer to creating a more just and peaceful world. Global Ties Detroit’s community partners like NAL make this global movement possible.
