Global Ties Detroit Announces Fareed Shalhout as New Board Chair
    January 07, 2026

Global Ties Detroit is pleased to announce the election of Fareed Y. Shalhout as its new Board Chair. Fareed currently serves as the Executive Director of Strategic Global Engagement and Operations for the Office of the Vice Provost at Wayne State University, where he leads strategic development and operational management across international programs and partnerships.

In his role at Wayne State, Fareed oversees key units including the Office of International Programs, International Students and Scholars, Education Abroad, the English Language Institute, and more than 150 international partnerships. His work advances international education, enrollment growth, immigration compliance, and student success, while supporting federally funded initiatives such as the Mandela Washington Fellowship, the Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program, and Fulbright scholar orientation.

Global Ties Detroit and the Wayne State Office of International Programs have a long-standing collaborative relationship, frequently working together on annual projects that support international visitors, fellows, and community engagement initiatives. The Office of International Programs has also been a valued sponsor of several Global Ties Detroit events, further strengthening the partnership between the two organizations.

Fareed joined Wayne State University in 2018 and previously served as Director of Global Student Engagement and Orientation Coordinator under Student Success. He is an active member of NAFSA and has been deeply involved with Global Ties Detroit, most recently serving as Vice Chair of the Board.

“I first joined Global Ties Detroit as a volunteer in 2018, where I was immediately struck by the strength of the community and the impact our programs have on Detroit and the greater state of Michigan,” said Shalhout. “Stepping into the role of Board Chair is an incredible honor, and I’m committed to supporting and strengthening our mission of fostering citizen diplomacy.”

Global Ties Detroit looks forward to Fareed’s leadership and continued collaboration with Wayne State University as the organization advances global engagement and citizen diplomacy in Detroit and beyond.
