Global Ties Detroit Attends USGLC’s “When America Leads, Michigan Wins” Event on Global Engagement and Economic Growth
    April 23, 2026

Global Ties Detroit attended an important discussion titled “When America Leads, Michigan Wins,” hosted by the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition. The event brought together influential leaders focused on strengthening Michigan’s role in the global economy.

The conversation with Paul Marin of the US Trade Development and Development Agency (USTDA) was facilitated by Eric A. Moorer Jr., who also serves on Global Ties Detroit’s advisory board. He was joined by Global Ties Detroit President Marian Reich, along with board members Britany Affolter-Caine, PhD, Executive Director, Research Universities for Michigan, Faris Alami, founder of International Strategic Management, and Ed Clemente, Senior Advisor for Trends and Development at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

The event featured insights from Paul Marin, Director for Public Affairs at the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, who shared how international engagement and strategic partnerships can create tangible economic opportunities for Michigan businesses. The discussion highlighted how investments in diplomacy and global cooperation not only strengthen national security but also drive local economic growth—an increasingly important connection as global competition intensifies.

Following the event, Moorer reflected on the value of Global Ties Detroit’s work and partnership, noting, “Working with Global Ties Detroit and its Board has been incredibly valuable. They bring a strong network and real-world perspective that helps connect Michigan’s local leaders to global opportunities.” He added, “Global Ties Detroit’s Board plays a critical role in bridging global relationships with local impact, helping ensure international engagement translates into real opportunities for communities across Michigan.”

He also underscored the importance of collaboration and engagement opportunities, stating, “We’ve been proud to partner with Global Ties Detroit and have their members join discussions like our USTDA roundtable, where we focused on how America’s global engagement helps Detroit businesses compete and win globally.” Additionally, he highlighted the impact of national-level advocacy: “Bringing Global Ties Detroit members to Washington for meetings on Capitol Hill is a powerful way to elevate Michigan voices and show how America’s global leadership directly supports jobs and economic growth back home.”

With 1.1 million Michigan jobs—representing 20% of the state’s workforce—supported by trade, the importance of international engagement is clear. As Moorer noted, “In Michigan, 1,100,000 jobs are supported by trade… That’s why strong international connections are essential to keeping Michigan competitive in a global economy.”

Events like this reinforce a key message: when the United States leads globally, Michigan’s businesses, communities, and economy are positioned to thrive.
