Global Ties Detroit Welcomes our new Program Associate Suki Hamka
    May 14, 2026

We are thrilled to welcome our new Program Associate Suki Hamka to the GTD team! She brings a passion for storytelling, cultural exchange, and community engagement that aligns deeply with the mission of citizen diplomacy.

She earned her undergraduate degree in Global Studies from Wayne State University and completed her graduate degree in Experimental Humanities and Social Engagement at New York University.

When reflecting on the meaning of citizen diplomacy, she shared:

“I believe that the most meaningful form of diplomacy happens in the everyday moments — over a shared meal, through a local story, or in the exchange of a cultural tradition. Citizen diplomacy, to me, is about finding those moments of genuine human connection where people feel excited about sharing their stories. I’m drawn to this work because it reminds us that understanding the world begins with opening the door to your own community.”

She is especially excited to contribute to GTD’s mission by connecting Detroit’s local culture with global communities:

“I am most excited about what is at the heart of citizen diplomacy, the opportunity to introduce our local Detroit culture to the world, while simultaneously learning about the rich cultures of the people we welcome! For me, storytelling has always been the most powerful tool to connect communities, and joining GTD feels like the perfect home for that passion. I love collecting stories just as much as I love sharing them, and I can’t wait to contribute to a team that understands the transformative power of creating a space where shared stories can be shared during a cup of coffee or over a traditional meal at someone’s home!”

We are excited for the creativity, warmth, and global perspective she brings to the team. Please join us in giving her a warm welcome to GTD!
