Lex Zavala is heading to Istanbul today with Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation Founder Angela Reyes. This opportunity came as a result of the mutually beneficial partnership between Global Ties Detroit and DHDC.
Lex Zavala is the Director of Outreach and Development at DHDC. For more than a decade, Lex and the DHDC have been welcoming and working with US Department of State-sponsored delegations and fellows that are hosted by Global Ties Detroit through such initiatives as the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), Professional Fellows Programs facilitated by American Councils for International Education, and more. Through these international exchanges, Lex and his colleagues make long lasting connections, partnerships, and friendships with global counterparts, sharing stories and strategies to strengthen their home communities, educate and empower local youth and families.
During their time in Turkey, Zavala and Reyes will be leading a two day training on storytelling and strategic planning. He’ll also be interviewing refugees from Syria in Turkey and undocumented immigrants and asylum seekers in Detroit to incorporate in a “photo/voice project”.
Last week, we sat down with Lex at the Center, meeting right after a Global Ties Detroit delegation of Eastern European and Central Asian educators toured DHDC to learn about their successful community engagement initiatives. Zavala reflected on how fruitful DHDC’s partnership with Global Ties Detroit is, “I’ve gotten to travel the world because of it (Global Ties Detroit partnership) and experience a ton of new cultures that I would’ve never been exposed to,” says Zavala. “For a kid from Detroit to be able to go to places that I never thought I would see before is amazing.”
DHDC will be recognizing its partnership with Global Ties Detroit at their annual Partners’ Breakfast on May 11, 2023. We are honored to be featured at this signature event. “We wanted to of course acknowledge the things that have come through from our partnership with Global Ties,” says Zavala. “We want to tell how we’re bringing different cultures that normally wouldn't have come together, together. I think it is a completely awesome and unique thing that we are doing together.”
By opening your home to international visitors, you are given the opportunity to experience a new culture and build lasting friendships.
